Tech Review #4: EconEdLink

EconEdLink is a free website that provides personal finance and economics materials for K-12 teachers and students. I would recommend this site to secondary social studies or math teachers as well as all elementary school teachers. There are 750+ lessons to choose from, all of which contain detailed lesson plans and activities. This website has one of the cleanest lesson filtering systems I have ever come across. You can filter your search by lesson rating, Common Core/state/national standards, grade range, lesson type, or by concept.

I think this is a great resource for social studies teachers who are struggling to incorporate economics into their curriculum. Although most states include economics in their social studies standards, it is not typically included on standardized assessments and, consequently, often disregarded. While we may not have time to teach entire units on economics, I believe social studies teachers should incorporate these types of lessons whenever possible. It is important for students to learn how to manage money responsibly and to understand how our economic system works. This website could also be useful for K-12 teachers looking to reinforce math skills by using real-life applications. Another interesting aspect of this website is that it's designed for student use as well. However, I feel like the lesson plan structure that accompanies many of the activities would not appeal to students.

  1. Sounds like a very interesting site. Although economics is not a "tested" standard, it is very important. So many high school students leave high school with absolutely no sense of a budget or finances. I know because I have two nieces and nephews that fit right in to this category!
